4 cups flour ( add flour a bit at a time, i sometimes only need 3 1/2 cup, dough will be sticky not dry)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon soda
Mix together.
In another bowl, mix:
1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup white sugar
1 and 1/3 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Cream shortening and sugar . Add eggs and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients in. Divide into 4 balls.
Ball 1. Add 3-4 tablespoons cocoa and 1 teaspoon almond extract.
Ball 2. Add 1 teaspoon orange peel, and 1/2 teaspoon orange juice.
Ball 3. Add green food coloring.
Ball 4. Add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 cup chopped walnuts.
Roll each ball into a "snake" shape, about 1 inch thick. Roll in wax paper and chill.
Slice, decorate, and bake 375 degrees for 8 minutes.
Oh the memories these cookies bring! Everyone has their favorites, and everyone's are different. The kids have so much fun decorating these. I love traditions!
